Artist research Phyllida Barlow

My original idea for my sculpture was completely inspired by Phyllida Barlows ‘folly’ at the Venice biennial in 2017. There way something about the way she filled the room that really inspired me. Although it didn’t resonate with my practice whatsoever, I was completely in awe of her work.

Wood piece

This piece of wood I found by the side of a road walking one day, then carried it home with my brother. I really liked the water marks on this plank and the cut out on one end with I assume was cut to fit around a pipe or something. I really like using discarded pieces of wood like this as I like the thought of where it has been previously. It had one been a tree, then used for whatever reason, to them come into my hands and in a way return to what it was, as what I paint is all inspired by nature.

I started by applying a base of different acrylics thinly to apply an extra layer of colour to the wood. I then stated to apply oil paint with a palette knife quite generously in areas, mixing the paint on the lunge them applying it directly to the wood. I then used peobe paints to creat some honeycomb like area (they’re quite subtle) in and around the oils paints. lastly I applied some gold leaf in areas to add more depth.

I’m pretty happy with this piece but may return to it to add a little more.

Canvas

This piece was a trial of brush stokes, colour and texture. I used a sand texture paste and modelling paste as a base to get some kind of text site to the canvas then used a photo, that has really caught my attention over these past few months, to base the colours off. I’m not really happy with this piece, the colours are quite off also this way of creating texture just doesn’t quite feel like me.
